Abohar is a small town located on the border of India-Pakistan. In the past there were hardly any educational facilities for the inhabitants of the area, particularly for the girls. The middle-class parents were not in a positin to bearthe cost of hostel fortheirgirls of the nearby towns. To provide necessary shelter to the girl students and the hostel facility, the people of Abohar decided to build Lajpat Rai Mahila Hostel at Abohar.
With the help of local market committee, the Municipal Committee and the donations received from general public, the hostel was built in 1967 named as ‘Mahila Hostel Abohar’. The hostel was inaugurated by Smt. Lalita Shastri wife of late Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri, former Prime Minister of India and President of the Society on 24.9.1967 with only 20 girl students.
With the passage of time it was felt necessary to admit even the working women in the hostel and for this purpose, the Government of India sanctioned necessary funds in 1978-79. Since then in addition to the girl students even the working women were accommodated in the hostel. Necessary infrastructure including a good library was started in the hostel.
